Achilles Tendinopathy

What Is Achilles Tendinopathy?

Pain at the back of the heel from overuse or strain

Achilles tendinopathy is a common injury that causes pain in the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel bone. It can be brought on by a sudden injury or repeated strain over time—especially in activities that involve running, jumping, or rapid changes of direction.

You may hear it referred to as Achilles tendonitis or tendinosis, depending on the stage of the condition. Pain can be felt either in the middle of the tendon or right where it attaches to the heel.

What Causes It?

• Flat feet or poor foot mechanics
• Tight or weak calf muscles
• Limited ankle flexibility
• Sudden increases in training or activity
• Poor warm-up routines
• Unsupportive footwear
• High-impact sports or movements

Common Symptoms

• Pain in the middle of the Achilles or where it meets the heel
• Morning stiffness or pain after periods of rest
• Discomfort during or after activity (can worsen over time)
• Swelling or thickening of the tendon
• Lumps felt along the tendon in chronic cases
