The Wimmera’s Foot and Ankle Professionals
A common injury caused by twisting or rolling the ankle
Ankle sprains are one of the most frequent musculoskeletal injuries and can happen during sport or daily life. They occur when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn, usually when the foot rolls inward (inversion sprain) or outward (eversion sprain).
In an inversion sprain, the ligaments commonly affected include the anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and posterior talofibular ligament. Eversion sprains, though less common, may damage the spring ligament and deltoid ligament on the inside of the ankle.
If not properly managed, ankle sprains can lead to long-term instability and increase the risk of future injuries, so early treatment and rehab is essential.
Sprains are classified based on severity:
Managing recovery and preventing further injury
• Icing & Anti-inflammatories – Especially important in the early, acute stage to reduce swelling and pain
• Ankle Bracing or Taping – To provide support while the ligaments heal
• Footwear Advice – Supportive shoes to reduce strain on the ankle
• Orthotics – Custom devices to improve foot and ankle alignment
• Tailored Exercise Program – Strengthening and proprioceptive training to rebuild stability and prevent re-injury
• Rehabilitation – Includes gradual return to activity and load, guided by a podiatrist
