Sesamoiditis

What Is Sesamoiditis?

Pain beneath the big toe from overuse or pressure

Sesamoiditis is an overuse injury that causes pain and inflammation in the small sesamoid bones and surrounding tendons beneath the big toe joint. These bones help with movement and weight-bearing, so when they’re irritated—usually from repetitive pressure, tight shoes, or high-impact activity—it can make every step uncomfortable.

Common Symptoms

• Ongoing pain underneath the big toe, especially when walking or standing
• Swelling in the ball of the foot
• Pain that worsens with toe movement or pressure on the area
• Symptoms can build gradually or come on after a specific injury
