Stress Fracture

What Are Stress Fractures?

Tiny cracks in the bone from repetitive stress

Stress fractures are small, hairline cracks that form in bones due to repeated impact or overuse—not from a single traumatic injury. They’re especially common in weight-bearing bones like the metatarsals (in the foot) and the tibia (shin), and often develop gradually over time through activities such as running, jumping, or training without adequate recovery.

These injuries occur when a bone is placed under force again and again, without enough rest to heal. Over time, small cracks form and eventually lead to persistent pain and inflammation.

Common Symptoms

• Gradual onset of pain without a specific injury
• Pain that ranges from mild to severe
• Localised tenderness when pressing on the bone
• Swelling in the affected area
• Pain worsens with weight-bearing or physical activity
• Pain eases with rest

Treatment Options

RICE Protocol

Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation during the acute phase

Orthotics

Footwear Assessment

Ensuring shoes absorb impact and provide proper support

Activity Modification

Reducing or pausing high-impact activities

Stretching & Strengthening Rehab Program

To restore movement and prevent recurrence

CAM Boot

A controlled ankle motion boot may be required in more severe cases
