Tibialis Anterior Tendinopathy

What Is Tibialis Anterior Tendinopathy?

Shin and ankle pain caused by overuse of the tendon

Tibialis anterior tendinopathy (or tendonitis in its early, acute stage) is a condition where the tibialis anterior tendon becomes irritated or damaged due to overuse. This tendon runs along the front of your shin and helps lift the foot during walking or running.

The condition typically develops when the tendon is repeatedly strained beyond what it can handle—often from activities like running, kicking, walking uphill, or training on uneven surfaces. Over time, this repetitive load causes micro-tears and inflammation, leading to pain and weakness.

Common Symptoms

• Pain or tenderness along the shin, foot, or front of the ankle
• Swelling in the affected area
• Pain that worsens with activity or exercise
• Stiffness or weakness in the ankle
• In more severe cases, difficulty lifting the foot (foot drop)
