Pre-season Preparation

It’s that time of year again where school has gone back, and pre-season training for netball and football is commencing! Pre-season is a great way to prepare your body for the season ahead after a period of rest, with the intention to progressively load your body to perform, build strength, fitness, and cardiovascular fitness, and sport-specific technical skills. However it can also be the time where old injuries resurface, or new ones develop. We often see a spike in running, which can lead to overload injuries from the increased volumes of jumping, running and physically demanding tasks during training. Having a sufficient pre-season is key to the prevention of injury!

Ways to get ahead with your pre-season training in 2025:

  • Appropriate Footwear : Wearing appropriate footwear that suits your foot type can improve foot biomechanics and prevent muscle overuse. Get your feet assessed properly to ensure you’re wearing the right shoe for you!
  • Training surfaces : Ensure you’re training on softer surfaces like grass, as this places less strain on our body and muscles
  •  Listen to your body : Pain is our body’s way of telling us something is wrong so it is very important to tune into our senses, and understand that it’s okay to have some soreness after exercise, ensuring you’re having sufficient time to rest between training sessions
  • Training load : Gradually build your training load, avoid changing too many variables at once such as intensity, frequency and volume
  • Warm up + Cool down : Complete dynamic and active movements pre-exercise for your warm up, and static stretches post exercise for your cool down
